I’m 22 years old, I’ve been fending for myself and assisting my family since I was 16yrs old and due to some parental issues, I had to rent my own apartment. I’m currently in a relationship with a guy for two and half years now. He takes care of my needs, but he doesn’t make me happy, he talks to me anyhow. Whenever I go visit him all he wants to talk about is sex and nothing else. I’m not happy in the relationship but I have to be in it because I needed the financial assistance, because it’s very hard to get a job and most employees wants you to use what you have to get want you want.

I don’t want to do that so I decided to stick with this my guy till I can gather as much money as I can to start up a business. I eventually started up a business, but the business failed, the area was bad, so the business broke down due to no customers and products were getting spoiled. Now this my boyfriend beat me up for the first time in 2and 1/2 years. I really want to break up with him, but my situation won’t let me. I want to start my life afresh, but I don’t know what step to take or where to start from. it’s very hard for a lady to survive in Nigeria without doing prostitution and I don’t want to ever do that. Please I need your advice on what to do because depression is killing me slowly.

    Hello dear.

It can get really bad if you decide to stay in that relationship because like you said, he doesn’t make happy and now he is gradually turning into an abuser. It is possible he is treating you this way because he knows you have nowhere to go and no source of income to sustain yourself.

You can try talking to him calmly about his sudden change in character and see if he will listen to you. I will also suggest you start searching for a job or start up a business no matter how little it may be, so you are not completely dependent on your partner or anyone.

Do not stay in a relationship where you are not respected, loved, valued or treated right, because you deserve it all. Making the decision to leave might be difficult but I believe it’s a great step to growth and finding yourself.
